ARTIVIST Seoul Presents Okokume's Maeum Ties
Seoul, Korea - November 27, 2024 - ARTIVIST is delighted to welcome Barcelona-based artist Okokume (Laura Mas Hernandez) to its residency program. Known for her iconic character Cosmic Girl, Okokume’s imaginative, emotionally resonant works have found audiences across the globe. Now, through this residency, she will engage with new artistic explorations shaped by her profound personal growth and deep-rooted cultural influences.
Okokume’s work is a reflection of her inner evolution, shaped by years of absorbing and connecting with diverse cultures. Particularly, her long-standing connection to Korean culture has richly inspired her artistic practice. Having first visited Korea eight years ago, Okokume found herself deeply moved by the country’s vibrant traditions, its harmonious coexistence of historical and modern influences, and the intricate beauty of materials such as hanji paper. This residency has provided her a space to amplify these inspirations, leading her to create work that blends serene color palettes and textures rooted in Korean heritage.

"For me, it has been very important to make this change: coming from Barcelona to Seoul, changing the scenery, changing workplace, the climate, the people, but it has really felt like home, and it has been very inspiring to see artworks, visit many galleries, many museums, and to enjoy a cozy space. It has helped me a lot to make a significant change in my work here in Seoul."

Laura Mas Hernandez (b.1985; Mataró, Spain), known as Okokume, constructs fictive worlds to seek a universally resonant psyche for the contemporary audience. In her paintings, she explores alternatives to saturated presentations of womanhood, trauma, anxiety and the environmental crises in the media. Adopting a distinct graphic style, Okokume’s visual language reflects her positioning and identity, which is fostered by the internet, media, pop culture and an increasingly tight-knit international network.
